The edge is sharp!

In his lecture "On Other Spaces" (Des espaces autres) in 967, Michel Foucault uses an interesting concept: "heterotopias of deviation" or in the literature: "heterotopias of deviation".

This concept is innovative in that it provides a framework for understanding how modern societies manage and control individuals who deviate from established norms through specific spatial arrangements. In Foucault's theoretical framework, heterotopias are real places that exist within society but function as "counter-spaces", simultaneously reflecting, questioning and reversing other places within a culture. Unlike utopias, which are idealized but non-existent spaces, heterotopias are real physical spaces that function according to their own rules and systems. Foucault argues that primitive societies had "crisis heterotopias", sacred or forbidden places reserved for individuals in crisis (adolescents, menstruating women, the elderly) according to their society. In modern society, these have largely been replaced by heterotopias of deviance, designed to accommodate individuals who deviate from established norms.

These spaces are characterized by a few key features:

They harbor individuals whose behavior deviates from the norm.

They operate under their own system of rules and power relations.

They maintain strict boundaries between inside and outside.

They often have both punitive and rehabilitative functions.

They reflect society's attitudes towards deviance and normality.

They can be institutional spaces such as psychiatric hospitals, prisons, nursing homes, rehabilitation centers, correctional facilities, homeless shelters, addiction treatment centers; social spaces such as immigrant neighborhoods, ghettoized areas, living spaces of marginalized communities and even slum hotels...

Within heterotopias of deviance, power relations are particularly visible and intense. These spaces embody systems of surveillance, control and normalization that aim to change behavior and produce "docile bodies", what Foucault calls "disciplinary power".

Cuban writer Guillermo Rosales (1946-1993) is one of the most original and tragic figures of 20th century Latin American literature. Rosales struggled with schizophrenia throughout his life, fled the revolution, lived in exile and eventually committed suicide. His most important work "Boarding Home" (Spanish: "La casa de los náufragos") is considered one of the masterpieces of modern Cuban literature...

"Boarding Home", published in 1987, is Rosales' most important surviving work. The novel tells the story of a semi-autobiographical character named William Figueras and his experiences in a Miami nursing home. Figueras, like Rosales, is a fugitive from Cuba and a mentally ill writer.

An attentive reader will notice that the author has taken the "heterotopias of deviation" that Foucault once referred to as "heterotopias of deviation" as both social texture and dramatic backdrop for his novel. The novel is characterized by its use of simple and minimalist language, short and punchy sentences in the style of Hemingway, a direct and partly brutal realism, interior monologues and dream sequences.

Perhaps because of these characteristics, the novel was awarded the "Letras de Oro" prize by a jury that included Octavio Paz when it was published...

It was this damp and profound novel that inspired the first feature film by French filmmaker Joan Chemla. I realize that the introduction is long, but please allow me to give a little more background, because the phenomenon called "first film" is worth a little chit-chat!

The director in his purest form: First movie

From Nolan, the golden boy of Hollywood, to Tarantino, the rebel spirit of independent cinema... Do you know what they all have in common? Yes, you guessed it: That unsettling, exciting first movie experience, accompanied by sleepless nights and endless coffee.

Have a conversation with a director, ask them about their first movie. Their eyes will either light up or they will say with a slight sigh "oh those days...". Because the first film is the most naked, the most vulnerable, but perhaps the purest form of a director. Just like first love, clumsy but passionate, flawed but sincere...

Let's remember Nuri Bilge Ceylan; he stepped into the world of short films with "Koza", but dived into deep waters with "Kasaba". Using his own family as actors, working with minimal crew and equipment... Thinking about it now, perhaps the economic necessities of those days laid the foundations of the minimalist style we praise today.

"I have no money, but I have an idea!"... Is there any young director who hasn't said this phrase? Christopher Nolan shot his first movie "Following" on weekends. Why? Because everyone was busy during the week! The crew was more like a group of friends than a team behind the camera. But that movie became the business card of Nolan, who today shoots movies with multi-million budgets.

Everyone knows how Tarantino made "Reservoir Dogs"; he wrote the script while working in a video store and went door to door until Harvey Keitel noticed it. Now imagine Tarantino, a video store employee, waiting in the producer's office. Who knows what was going through his mind? But that restless young man is today one of the most original voices in cinema.

Do you know the most common trap young directors fall into? Trying to fit everything into one movie. As if they will never make a movie again... They try to cram all their ideas, dreams and stories into one movie! That's why first films are often either too ambitious or too personal.

Greta Gerwig's "Lady Bird", for example, is a semi-autobiographical first movie. Or how interesting was Robert Eggers' "The Witch", the guy literally reconstructed 1630s New England in his first movie! Isn't that crazy? But this madness, this courage, this naivety... That's what makes the first movies so special.

Now, of course, everything has changed. You can shoot a movie with a smartphone in your pocket. Sean Baker's "Tangerine" was shot on an iPhone, for example. But this time there is another problem: Anyone can make a movie! Digital democracy is great, but standing out from the crowd... That's the real challenge.

In short, the first movie is actually a director's manifesto. It is the manifesto of young people who sometimes shoot commercials or make wedding videos for a living, but at the same time struggle to realize that project they call "my movie". Sometimes clumsy, sometimes brilliant, but always sincere.

And maybe that's the most beautiful thing, the purity of that first step, the excitement of that first love. Just like Truffaut's "400 Blows" or Demirkubuz's "C Block"... Sometimes a first movie is not only a beginning, but also a masterpiece.

For this reason, those who have a close relationship with the history of cinema always keep an eye on the first films of new directors. Because behind those nervous, excited and passionate first steps, perhaps the great masters of tomorrow are hidden.

French director Joan Chemla's "Seeing Your Heart" (originally titled Si tu voyais son coeur) is about all the above-mentioned issues. First of all, it is the director's first feature film. Chemla has an interesting career path. After his early work in law and journalism, he wrote, produced and directed his first short film Mauvaise Route in 2008. He then directed Dr. Nazi, based on a short story by Charles Bukowski (for which he won the Canal+ award at the Clermont-Ferrand film festival) and L'homme à la cervelle d'or, based on a short story by Alphonse Daudet.

Her first feature film "If You Could See Your Heart or Being able to see your heart" (S i tu voyais son cœur), which we will analyze in detail in a moment, premiered in the Platform competition at the 2017 Toronto International Film Festival. Cameron Bailey, artistic director of this festival, said, "Joan Chemla is someone who will have a long career as a maker of personal films. There is an individual stamp here." He spoke highly of the French director.

Let's talk about the movie, which has surprising depths...

Joan Chemla's first feature film in the director's chair, "If You Saw His Heart" in English, is a loose adaptation of Cuban writer Guillermo Rosales' novel "Halfway House". Of course, it is possible to say that it is a brave experiment that hovers on the borders of Film Noir and romantic melodrama. In terms of acting performances, it offers a narrative that swims in the dark waters of guilt, loneliness and the desire for self-destruction, especially through the character of Daniel, brought to life by Gael García Bernal's impressive performance.

Oh, hotel rooms!

Here's a very brief synopsis: After the accidental death of his best friend, Daniel finds himself in the Metropole Hotel, a haven for vagrants and lost souls. Filled with guilt, Daniel slowly sinks into the violence that surrounds him. His encounter with Francine sheds light on his life.

And let's look at the details.

The movie begins with Daniel, ostracized from the Roman community after the death of his best friend, taking refuge in one of the worst motels in the city. Chemla has an interesting cinematography. At times its lyrical visual aesthetic is reminiscent of Kar-wai's In the Mood for Love and 2046, at others it wanders through the slums like Jarmusch's depiction of America out of Parliament Blue in Stranger Than Paradise. The French director manages to present the ghettos of Marseille as an essential element of the story, rather than a setting for the movie. From a character perspective, Daniel's story, which intersects with the fragile Francine character played by Marine Vacth, is told in a Bukowski-like atmosphere.

Much of the film takes place in this bleak location, perhaps a veritable hell on earth, contrasting with the beauty of Marseille, which is often used as a backdrop in cinema as a city bathed in sun and sea. I think the director is not trying to give the viewer a moment of tranquility, but rather to reveal the inner chaos of the character who, while agreeing to stay in a marginal refuge run by a sadistic hotelier who takes advantage of the loneliness and poverty of his guests, is confronted with the violence of the gypsy gangsters he is trying to save. On the other hand, the title hides a very dark reality, so much so that viewers who are not used to this kind of darkness may find it difficult to follow the journey of a character who from the very beginning wants to hurt himself and suffer as much as possible. Even worse, the viewer will certainly find it difficult to understand the reasons for such inconsistent behavior of a character who expresses himself (very) little.

The character of Francine is perhaps the only Francine character in the movie that is faithful to the novel, and perhaps the only character in the movie that is left faithful to the novel.

While watching the movie, Necip Fazıl's famous poem "Hotel Rooms" came to my mind.

"Your aches and pains pulse on the bare wall,

Nail wounds, nail wounds.

**

Weep, the unfamiliar, the voiceless, the dying,

In hotel rooms, in hotel rooms!..."

One of the most important features of the film is the way director Chemla twists chronology and uses a jumpy time flow. Obviously, from the very opening sequence of the movie, he consciously prefers a fragmented narrative that makes it difficult for the viewer to navigate. However, this stylistic preference sometimes reaches to the extent of undermining the overall depth of the movie. Despite its success in creating a visual feast and atmosphere, the movie falls short in terms of character development and emotional connection.

Obviously, the lead actor deserves a little more praise. Bernal's performance stands out as one of the strongest aspects of the movie. The actor, who can tell a story even with his eyes, manages to add depth to the character he draws with a minimal approach. The line "If you saw his heart", which is the title of the movie, gains meaning with Bernal's performance.

Let's take the musical palette. Composer Gabriel Yared's score for the first film (it's unclear how much he grasped the spirit of the work) is nothing more than a mediocre melody. The real jewel of the movie, however, is the eerie performance of Karim Leklou as the hotelier who wanders the gloomy corridors of the hotel, dancing in the shadows of violence and without a shred of sympathy. The dark atmosphere created by this terrifying character gets into the bones of the viewer. Leklou's presence breathes a bit of life into the slow-moving and dark script, while offering a multi-layered perspective beyond the limited perspective of the main character who flounders in his mental turmoil.

Risky chronology courage!

As we mentioned before, the movie has a non-linear chronology, which makes it a matter of time before the audience loses its attention and is suddenly thrown out of the story. Because Chemra gives no clues other than tiny visual details to help the audience as she jumps back and forth in time. A scar, some duct tape, etc...

The protagonists are clearly inspired by Rosales' novel. However, the caricature-like characterizations of the side characters sometimes undermine the impact of the movie. For instance, the character of Francine deserves more depth. This typology, which is very close to the characters in Demirkubuz's Innocence, somehow seems like an afterthought in the story. Likewise, Daniel's emotional awakening, which symbolically marks his coming out of his depression... It looks like a dramatic patch in the movie!

If we had analyzed the film in depth, it would have opened up much richer valleys. The film tries to touch the psychological depths of its marginalized characters by referencing classics such as One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest and The Shining. And although the references made due to such formal concerns in the movie are not always successful, it is still possible to see it as a brave effort!

Yes, maybe not a masterpiece, but for all its flaws, "If you saw his heart" is much more than a first movie. It is bold, striking and has a story that you carry with you even after the movie is over. Maybe it doesn't draw the concepts of guilt and redemption enough, but it is a dark world of lost souls... And a warning, if you are prone to depressive moods, it would be in your best interest to stay away from this movie!

Fethullah Gülen'in 26 Aralık 2014 tarihinde "Liyakat ve İstihkak" başlıklı sohbetinde ortaya koyduğu "Hizmet Mürtedleri" kavramı, o günden bugüne nedense beklediğim tartışmaya sebep olmamıştı.

Aristoteles'in "Retorik" eserindeki "deliberative rhetoric" (müzakereci söz sanatı) kuramı perspektifiyle bakacak olursak, bir alimin 70 yıllık konuşma deneyimi sonucu geliştirdiği kavramsal çerçevenin tesadüfi olmadığı açıktır.

Max Weber'in "ideal tip" metodolojisi çerçevesinde, bu kavram toplumsal hareketlerdeki ayrışma dinamiklerini anlama konusunda açıklayıcı değer taşımakta.

Diğer yandan Max Weber'in "değer nötrelliği" ilkesi açısından değerlendirildiğinde, ilmi bir çözümlemenin savunmacı kaygılardan arındırılması gerekmekte.

Much more than a goal scorer!

Pelé

November 19th, 1969. A crowd of over 65,000 at the Maracana Stadium in Rio de Janeiro. The hosts, Vasco Da Gama, are hosting a very important opponent: Santos. In fact, there's an even bigger name than Santos: Pele.

When his name is announced, the Maracana stadium collapses.

Pele, who has already netted 999 times, is expected to score his thousandth goal here.

It's a historic day, because since the invention of soccer, no footballer on earth has come close to reaching this figure, let alone reaching it.

For the first time in its 70-year history, Vasco's own fans want a rival to score a goal.

In the first minutes of the match, as expected, Santos started to press, Pele, facing the goalkeeper with a through ball, lost his angle, but hit the ball, a little softly, Vasco goalkeeper Edgardo Andrada was in great form and kept it comfortably. Their own fans started booing their goalkeeper, Andrada was dumbfounded! In the second half Pele, this time from outside the penalty area, curled the ball outside the box with the outside of his right foot, the Vasco goalkeeper, at the risk of injuring his knee, flew like a tiger and cleared it off the crossbar with the outside of his right foot. The crowd went wild with rage.

Although Vasco scored an own goal (a Vasco defender headed the ball into his own net just as Pele was about to score), the match ended in a draw and the king of football did not score that day. This was undoubtedly due to the fact that the number 4 and 5 players of the home team abandoned the game and put Pele in their sights. Actually Brito, Dutra, Fidelis         and Jair Marinho, the Vasco Da Gama defense was a wall.

And the extra time

The moment came with 12 minutes to go, when Pele, entering the penalty area with a through ball, was caught between two opposing players and brought down. It's a cliché: the referee didn't hesitate to point to the penalty spot. Goalkeeper Andrada protested a lot, but the noise from the stands was deafening: Pele, Pele, Pele...

The Brazilian people, who had been suffering for years from the Mondgel Syndrome, which I will tell you about in a moment, had trampled on the love of the club, glorified the opposing goal scorer, wanted him to go down in history, and everyone had only one concern: "o milésimo", the historical witness to the "thousandth".

Pele tensed up as he planted the ball on the white dot. For a moment he thought to look around him. None of his teammates were around, and he turned back in amazement. The entire Santos team was lined up side by side on the midfield line, praying.

Pele hit the ball half a meter above the ground to the left of the goalkeeper, Andrada flew with all his might, he had anticipated the corner, he had managed to touch the ball, but he couldn't stop it from going into the net. As Andrada punched the grass in anger, all hell broke loose at the Maracana. Hundreds of journalists, photographers, TV journalists flooded the pitch, substitutes, technical staff, fans and so on, the pitch was full and the celebration of the goal lasted 24 minutes.

One of the most important moments in the history of soccer, he went to the goal and took the ball between the nets and that ball is still considered sacred in Brazil today.
The scenes I have described are depicted in Netflix's new documentary Pelé.
The documentary is the result of an enormous archive search.
In addition to the fine workmanship, almost every living witness was interviewed. And of course, first and foremost with Pele, the hero of the documentary.
The documentary begins in an empty hangar as Pele, who has difficulty walking, slowly enters the frame and we learn the story from his mouth.
The Pele documentary starts by rewinding the movie a bit...
From the ghettos of Brazil, we learn about the poverty-stricken life of Pele, the painter's son of a father whose life is football.

Born in 1940 to a family of lumberjacks, the boy was named Edson Arantes do Nascimento Pele. A childhood spent in poverty with his two siblings, a professional soccer player father who was permanently unemployed... His name was Joao Ramos do Nascimento, his nickname was Dondinho (which doesn't sound very nice) and little Pele was called "son of Dondinho" for a long time.

Dondinho played for junior teams and when Pele was 6 years old, he got the chance to sign for Atletico Mineiro, one of Brazil's big teams. The festive mood at home was short-lived, as he suffered a cruel blow in his first game and was injured, forcing him to end his career. From then on, he pinned all his hopes on his son. He becomes her first mentor and coach. And the unfortunate father finds a job as a cleaner in a hospital.

Pele, on the other hand, struggles to support his family by shining shoes until the age of 15.

Sometimes with a ball made out of old socks, sometimes with a grapefruit, Pele plays bounce ball, giving his foot a great agility.

These parts are not detailed in the documentary, after a general narration, the main story starts in 1956, when he joined the Santos club at the age of 15. We hear about the beginning of Pele's professional life from his teammate Pepe, who first discovered him. At the age of 16 he made the first team.

The event that changed his destiny was undoubtedly his call-up to the 58 World Cup squad. A tremendous happiness in the lumberjack family. Pele gets on a plane for the first time in his life and travels abroad for the first time. At the World Cup in Sweden, Brazil was not recognized. It was even seen as a bit of an average team. As Pele recounts his memories, he says that the Swedish children were amazed by the color and thought it was paint. When the journalists learned that there was a 17-year-old boy in the squad for the quarterfinals in Gothenburg, they made some rather obscene comments before the match.

Pele remembered his father's words: "Believe in yourself and remember, whatever your age, career, fame, you are all equal on the pitch!"

The ball comes into his lap in the penalty area, he does what he had done a thousand times before with a grapefruit, softens it with his knee, dives past the opponent and shoots... When Pele scores, the picture changes. Brazil, who beat Wales with this goal, are France's opponents in the semifinals.

Pele plays like a 40-year veteran and scores against France. And then another, and another. Brazil eliminates the arrogant French 5-2.

In the collective memory of the Brazilian people, the defeat to Uruguay in 1950.

The society feels a great sense of humiliation because of this. Losing the cup at home to another country, a Latin American country, has a huge impact on the country's self-confidence. Not just the 200,000 Brazilians who filled the Maracana stadium, but the whole country is traumatized.

Brazilian writer Neslon Rodriguez says that after this incident, Brazilian society suffered from a syndrome called "Mongrel Comlaxia".

So what is this Mongrel Complex?

Radriguez explained his concept as follows: "The feeling of inferiority that Brazilians voluntarily put themselves in compared to the rest of the world with the "Mongrel Complex". Brazilians are inverted Narcissus, spitting in their own image. Here is the truth: we cannot find personal or historical excuses for self-esteem."

There is still an urban legend that many people committed suicide by throwing themselves down at the Maracana stadium at the end of a match.

The Portuguese word for this complex is complexo de vira-lata, which translates as complexo de vira-lata, or stray dog complex.

The historical cycle will show that the Brazilians experienced a similar situation again in 2014 when they lost 7-1 to the Germans at the World Cup, again at home.

You can research the concept of "Cultural Shame" to understand the definition more closely.

Let's continue with our documentary.

When Brazil, who had also eliminated France, faced Sweden in the final, all the players, with the exception of Pele, were very nervous. After Sweden's first goal, millions of Brazilians on the radio began to worry that history would repeat itself.

But heroes are heroes because they appear when they are needed most, and on the pitch the greatest hero in the history of soccer is born. Pele bounces the ball like a pair of intertwined socks, then, after beating his opponent, puts it in the corner. 1-1...

When hope blossoms, one grows... The Brazilian team shook off its humiliation and realized its strength. A few minutes after the first goal, Pele changed not only his personal history but also Brazil's fortunes with a header from Zagallo's cross. The Brazilian team won the final 5-2 and returned home as heroes. The country talks only about them, especially about Pele... 10 years of losers are over.

The documentary not only enriches the original match footage with interviews with the protagonists and witnesses, but also maintains continuity and increases curiosity.

In the documentary, we learn the unknown details of a well-known story.

A 17-year-old boy is changing the destiny of his country with his feet.

What follows is a story of heroism. Pele has become the country's biggest brand, adding value to everything he touches. First and foremost to his club Santos. The club, which was ordinary and had not achieved much until that day, ran from success to success and its fame went beyond the borders of the country.

But life is not a straight line and no story continues in the same line of happiness. Pele also experiences great pain, hardship and despair.

Pele, who brought three of the four World Cups he participated in during his career to his country, for a period of time, his fate and the fate of his country were so parallel that Brazil was plunged into political and social chaos due to injuries and his withdrawal from football.

When General Medici consolidated his dictatorship in the late 60s, he made great use of soccer. And Pele, of course.

At this very moment, the world is embracing another political hero: Muhammad Ali Clay. Unlike Pele, Muhammad Ali refuses to be a political tool and is greatly admired. Pele, on the other hand, is criticized even in his own country for being a tool for a dictator. But he has his reasons.

Brazil owed a lot to Santos, Santos owed a lot to Pele, Pele owed a lot to Brazil... In this cycle of gratitude, Pele refuses to be a political figure. But he also refuses to be used by the state. When he goes all the way to the dictator's palace, he receives great criticism from the public.

In 1966, in the World Cup finals in England, Brazil played incredibly cruel football against their opponents. Within a week Brazil had 8 players, including Pele, out of the squad due to injury. Bulgaria, Hungary and Portugal were mercilessly crushed by the yellow and green team.

No matter how much Pele, the country's national symbol, ran away, he could not escape the coups. It was during this period that the fragile Brazilian society collapsed socially and economically. It was as if there was no hope without Pele.

When Pele announced his retirement from the national team, clouds of pessimism surrounded the country.

It was as if football was the glue that held society together, and when this failure led to Pele quitting the national team and then announcing that he was quitting football, social unrest broke out in Brazil in 1968. The Medici government declared martial law. The general saw pessimism as an opportunity to consolidate his dictatorship.

The documentary does not act like Pele on these issues, but keeps its camera on the truth and tries to shed light on the history of the country beyond football. It talks about the peak of torture, murder, kidnappings, torture in prisons, repression, censorship and bans.

Directors Ben Nicholas and David Tryhorn (who we know from their documentaries on the famous athlete Danny Harris and the English soccer player Kenny Dalglish) While following Pele's life story, they also try not to miss the bigger picture.

Although side stories such as M. Ali and General Medici enrich the documentary in this respect, unfortunately, due to the time handicap, they are passed with small touches.

One of the most pleasant details is that the fatherly president of Santos at the time, Athiê Jorge Coury (who looks a lot like our late Süleyman Seba)

"As long as I am president, Pele will not be sold from Santos". Because according to Coury, Pele was a national treasure and national treasures could not be sold for any price.

Indeed, as soon as the Santos president changed, the new one, Vasco José Fae, gave the green light to Pele's transfer to America. Pele would try to save his body and soul, tired of being crushed under the weight of the world he lived in, by transferring to the Cosmos for 4 million dollars in 1975...

Between 1957-61, Pele scored 355 goals before he turned 21, a figure not reached by many scorers throughout their careers.

He scored 1284 goals for Santos, the team he played for until 1974.

By the time he retired from football in 1977, he had scored 1281 official goals in 1363 league games.

The number of goals he scored when he retired was much debated. Some say that Pele was lucky to have played football at a time when television was widespread and was the only channel in many countries. That's why many soccer players' goals were not included in the official literature. For some reason, the documentary prefers not to go into these issues.

On the other hand

The biggest problem with the documentary is its duration.

The one and a half hour documentary is full in every sense of the word. However, the material that could have been a series of at least 8 episodes is either wasted or not touched upon at all, so to speak. For this reason, they tried to complete the story by including a considerable epilogue in the finale. As a moviegoer, we don't see the details of his adventure as an actor in the documentary, for example...

With all its flaws and beauties, Netflix's Pele is a great documentary. It offers both a historical perspective on our generation and a first-person account of a genuine hero.

Do not miss...

Pele topu beyaz noktaya dikip gerildi.

Filmi biraz geriye sararak başlıyor Pele belgeseli…

16 yaşında A takıma geçiyor.

Brezilya halkının toplumsal hafızasında 1950 yılında Uruguay’a yenilmeleri.

Biz belgeselimize devam edelim.

Fransa’yı da ekarte eden Brezilya finalde ev sahibi İsveç ile karşı karşıya geldiğinde Pele hariç tüm futbolcularda büyük bir tedirginlik vardır. İsveç’in attığı ilk gol sonrasında radyo başındaki milyonlarca Brezilyalı tarihin tekrar edeceğinden endişe duymaya başlamıştır.

Başta kulübü Santos’a.
